Spirituality is promoted throughout the teaching and learning of Geography at Barnoldswick Church of England Primary School. The use of maps, globes and Google Earth, for example, helps children to understand the scale of the Earth that they live on and their place in the world.
Maps, photos, videos, news articles etc. create an awe and appreciation of their beautiful planet for example the landscape of The Lake District, Rivers of the world and the beauty of their own town, Barnoldswick. Through the use of Geographical resources, a sense of wonder and reverence is created as they start to understand the power of the natural world through units such as volcanoes, earthquakes and extreme weather.
The children are encouraged to imagine what life is like in other parts of the world (eg. China, Europe) and how landscapes, people and their cultures are similar and different to their own, helping to develop their sense of self as well as helping them feel connected to others around the world.
In topics, such as the Amazon Rainforest and Recycling, the children are encouraged to see different viewpoints and are able to make their own conclusions about what is important to them. This also helps the children to also understand their own roles and responsibilities as citizens of the Earth and creates a sense of unity as we have a shared aim to preserve the planet.
Throughout the curriculum, the children have ample opportunity to ask ‘Big Questions’ in regards to what happens where and why and they are encouraged to reflect on their answers.
