Music
Spirituality is promoted throughout the teaching and learning of Music at Barnoldswick Church of England Primary School. Music lessons are a vehicle to express, compose and reflect. Pupils are given the opportunity to collaborate as a group and play and sing together with a mission to create a culture where it’s OK to:
- Be curious and have an open mind
- Be guided by your values
- Empathise with others
- Learn and grow following failure
- Love and care for yourself and each other
- Be thankful for what is good
- Be comfortable with stillness and silence
- Appreciate the natural world
In addition, our whole school community are exposed to a new musician every month to further their spiritual awareness and curiosity of this subject. Examples of this are:
- David Bowie encouraged people to embrace their uniqueness and express themselves freely. He taught us that it’s okay to be different and that our differences make us special.
- We remember Nina Simone not only for her incredible music but also for her courage and commitment to equality.
- Elton John’s dedication to making a positive impact on society is a testament to his compassion and humanity.
- Joni Mitchell’s songs carry messages of being environmentally aware. They urge us to cherish the Earth and each other. Joni Mitchell reminds us that we can make the world a brighter place.
- Aretha Franklin’s songs conveyed a powerful message of empowerment, resilience, and social justice. Through her music, she championed themes of love, respect, and equality, urging listeners to stand up for themselves and demand the dignity they deserved.
- Bob Marley believed in fighting for equal rights and justice for everyone, regardless of their race or background. His music was a powerful tool for spreading love, unity, and hope.
- Freddie Mercury’s powerful voice, unique style, and courageous spirit have left an permanent mark on the world of rock and roll. He taught us to embrace our individuality, follow our dreams, and face challenges with resilience.
